Rick Sabath
Head Coach
Rick Sabath is in his second year as head coach of the Fort Hays State University baseball program.

In 2007, Sabath guided the Tigers to a 33-20 overall finish in his first season as head coach. He guided the Tigers to a 21-13 record in conference play, good for a fourth-place finish. In its first season as members of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, Fort Hays State qualified for the conference post-season tournament. Under Sabath's guidance, FHSU produced its 16th consecutive winning season, which dates back to 1992 when Fort Hays State became members of NCAA Division II.

Sabath came to Fort Hays State from the University of Kansas where he served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator in 2006. He helped guide the Jayhawks to their first ever Big XII Tournament title in 2006. It was the first conference title of any sort for the Jayhawks since 1949. The Jayhawks were selected as participants in the NCAA Regional in Corvallis, Ore., hosted by eventual national champion Oregon State University. Their 43 victories in 2006 were second most in school history.

Prior to his stint at the University of Kansas, Sabath was head coach at Garden City Community College from 2002-2005. In his three seasons, he compiled an overall record of 107-67. In 2003, he helped guide the Broncbusters to their first division title since the 1989 season and an appearance in the Region VI Final. The Broncbusters also won the division title in 2005 and were one win shy of advancing to the JUCO World Series finishing at 41-17.

Sabath was head coach of the Cloud County Community College baseball program from 2000-2002. He guided the Thunderbirds to their best ever conference finish in 2002. He was named the Jayhawk West Division Coach of the Year in 2001.

From 1996-2000, Sabath was an assistant coach at Hutchinson Community College. The Blue Dragons set a new win record each of the four seasons he was with the program. He helped guide HCC to four consecutive conference titles which include a post-season title in 1997 and regular season titles in 1998, 1999 and 2000. HCC had a combined record of 162-75 in those four seasons.

Sabath began his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Kansas. During his first stint with the Jayhawks, Sabath coached the catchers and served as the first base coach in 1995 under Dave Bingham and 1996 under Bobby Randall. Before his coaching days, Sabath played baseball at Fort Hays State University during the 1992 and 1993 seasons. He played at Barton County Community College during the 1990 and 1991 seasons.

Sabath is a native of Lenexa, Kan. He graduated with his bachelor's degree in physical education from Fort Hays State University in 1994. He earned his master's degree from the University of Kansas in 1996. Sabath and his wife Carol have two sons, Brett and Drew.

Jason Plourde
Assistant Coach
Jason Plourde is in his second season as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator of the Fort Hays State University baseball program.

A native of Sunland, California, Plourde was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Glendale Community College in California before making the move to FHSU. Prior to that, he served as the pitching coach at Los Angeles Valley College from 2000-2004.

Plourde was recently named Field Manager of the Rochester Honkers in the prestigious Northwoods League in the fall of 2007. Some of his other coaching duties include being the associate head coach and pitching coach for the Fayetteville Swampdogs of the Coastal Plain League during the summers of 2005, 2006, and 2007. In three summers in Fayetteville, he helped lead the Swampdogs to a record of 114-47. Prior to his time in Fayetteville, he spent two summers (2003 and 2004) as the pitching coach for the Madison Mallards of the Northwoods League, where the Mallards won the Northwoods League Championship in 2004.

Plourde played baseball at Los Angeles Valley College from 1998-99, where he received Academic All-Western State Conference honors. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in Kinesiology-Secondary Physical Education from Cal State-Northridge in 2002. In 2004, Plourde earned his master's degree in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University.

Mike Saddler
Assistant Coach
Mike Saddler is in his first year as an assistant coach of the Fort Hays State University baseball program.

Saddler comes to Fort Hays State from Baker University, where he served as an assistant coach from 2004-2007. While at Baker, he worked with the infielders and catchers during the 2005 season as well as serving as the third base coach. From 2006-2007, he served as the pitching coach in addition to coaching first base.

In addition to coaching at Baker, he served as the pitching coach for the Rochester Honkers of the Northwoods League from 2005-2007. While in Rochester, he helped guide the Honkers to numerous league records including wins in a season (50) and winning percentage (.746) on their way to a league title in 2006. Honker pitchers also set a number of team and league records under Saddler's guidance, including a record for team earned run average at 2.31. Before he began coaching, Saddler played baseball at the University of Kansas in 2004 and Montclair State University in New Jersey in 2003. He also played at Colby Community College from 2001-2002, where he earned Academic All-American honors in 2002. A native of Colby, Kan., Saddler earned a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management from the University of Kansas in 2006. He is currently working toward a master’s degree in Sports Administration at Fort Hays State University. Saddler is engaged to be married this summer to Sara Nally of Colby, Kan.

Nolan Deitrich
Graduate Assistant
Nolan Deitrich is in his first year as a graduate assistant coach for the Tiger baseball program. A native of Overbrook, Kan., Deitrich comes to the program from Washburn University where he served as an assistant for two seasons (2005-2006). Deitrich’s duties at Washburn included infield and first base coach and assisting with hitting.

Deitrich played at Washburn for two seasons. In 2004, he earned All-MIAA Honorable Mention honors at second base and was a member of the MIAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll his senior year.

Prior to playing at Washburn, Deitrich spent two seasons at Cloud County Community College. He was a member of Cloud County’s best postseason finish in 2003, as a part of the Sub-Region XI runner-up team and was a distinguished Academic All-American that same season.

Deitrich earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology at Washburn University in 2006. He is currently working towards a master’s degree in Sports Administration at Fort Hays State University.
