Mark Johnson is in his ninth season as head coach of the Fort Hays State University men’s basketball program. Johnson became the 14th men’s basketball coach in the school’s history on July 13, 2001. He has compiled a career record of 158-75 in eight seasons at Fort Hays State. He ranks among the top 20 active NCAA Division II men’s basketball coaches in winning percentage (.678). Johnson has guided the Tigers to three NCAA Tournament appearances in his time at FHSU.The Tigers posted their fourth 20-win season under Johnson in 2008-09 with a record of 20-9. The Tigers posted their highest conference finish since joining the MIAA, tying for third. The Tigers have qualified for the conference tournament in Kansas City every season since joining the MIAA in 2006. In 2007-08, the Tigers made their third NCAA Division II National Tournament appearance under Johnson. He guided the Tigers to a 19-11 record that season. The Tigers fell to eventual Elite Eight participant Central Oklahoma by a score of 65-64 in the first round of the South Central Regional in Stephenville, Texas. The best season for FHSU under Johnson was in 2005-06, its final season as a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The team finished 27-4 overall and won the regular season conference title with an 18-1 record. The Tigers reached the NCAA Division II North Central Regional semifinals before bowing out in a 60-58 loss to Northern State (S.D.). The Tigers were ranked #1 in the nation for two weeks during 2005-06. Johnson was named RMAC Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. He also coached the RMAC Player of the Year in 2005-06, Tyrone Shephard. The first team Johnson guided to the NCAA Tournament was in 2002-03. The Tigers posted a record of 23-8 that season, the second-most wins for any of Johnson’s teams at FHSU. Johnson’s teams have made conference post-season tournament appearances in all eight years he has been head coach at FHSU, with five in the RMAC and now three in the MIAA. Prior to being named the head coach, Johnson served as the Tigers’ assistant coach from 1996 until the 2001-02 season. He served as the Tigers’ interim coach following Gary Garner’s departure to Southeast Missouri State University prior to the start of the 1997-98 season. Before coming to FHSU, Johnson was the assistant coach at Phillips University, Enid, Okla. He coached the 1994-95 season at Labette Community College under Rand Chappell and then moved along with Chappell to Phillips University. Following his playing career at Pittsburg State University he spent two seasons as the Gorillas’ graduate assistant. Following a senior season that garnered him All-America, All-State, All-Metro and All-Conference honors at Omaha Millard South High School, he played basketball at Kilgore Junior College, Kilgore, Texas. His sophomore year he was selected to the Texas Eastern Athletic Conference Academic Team. Johnson played two seasons at Pittsburg State University where he earned Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association honors twice and All-South Region honors as a senior. Johnson received his associate degree from Kilgore Junior College in 1991, bachelor’s degree from Pittsburg State in 1993 and a master’s degree from Pittsburg State in 1994. He is married to the former Kenda Pruter of Natoma, Kan. They have two children, daughter Carly and son Truman. |
Jeremy Brown Assistant Coach |
Jeremy Brown is in his fourth season as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator of the Fort Hays State men’s basketball program. This is Brown’s second stint at FHSU after serving as a student assistant from 1998-2000 and a graduate assistant from 2001-2003. Brown was an assistant coach at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Okla., from 2004-2005 and helped coach the team to a top-25 ranking two years in a row. While with the Bulldogs, he helped coach one all-region and six all-conference players and helped guide the team to an NCAA tournament appearance during the 2004-2005 season. A native of Mulvane, Kansas, Brown played two years of basketball at Friends University in Wichita, Kan., from 1996-1998. Brown earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from FHSU in 2001 and a master’s degree in Sports Administration in 2003. |
Jonathan Raney Graduate Assistant |
Jonathan Raney is in his first season as a graduate assistant with Fort Hays State Men’s Basketball. Since his days as a player at Fort Hays State, Raney has coached at the collegiate level and played professionally.Most recently in 2008-09, Raney was a player for the Kansas City Spartans of the ABA, where he averaged 18 points per game. Raney had previous professional playing experience with the Athletes in Action exhibition teams. He played in Brazil in 2003, the United States East Coast team in 2005, and in Canada in 2007. He accumulated two tournament MVP honors in his time with Athletes in Action. In 2006-07, Raney was the assistant coach at Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City, Kan. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at Hill Junior College in Hillsboro, Texas. Raney spent time as a student assistant at Fort Hays State during the 2003-04 season. Raney played at Fort Hays State University from 2001 to 2003. He earned All-RMAC Honorable Mention honors in 2002-03 as a senior. He ranks fifth all-time at FHSU for career three-point field goal percentage (.433) and 10th in career three-point field goals made. Prior to FHSU, Raney played two years at Cowley County Community College from 1999 to 2001. He led the KJCCC in three-point field goal percentage as a sophomore. Raney earned his bachelor’s degree in Information Networking and Telecommunications from Fort Hays State in 2004. He is currently working on a master’s degree in Sports Administration at FHSU. The Lawrence, Kan., native is married to Fernanda Domingos of Franca, Brazil. Domingos is the assistant coach for the Fort Hays State volleyball team. They celebrated the birth of their son, Jackson, in the fall of 2009. |
