Head coach Tonja Hadley is in her third season as head coach of the Lady Tigers. Last season, she guided the Tigers to an 11-7 conference record in the team's first season as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). The team finished the conference regular season in a tie for third place and qualified for the MIAA Tournament in Kansas City.Hadley came to Fort Hays State from Colorado State University where she served as an assistant coach for four seasons with the Rams under head coach Mary Yori. At CSU, Hadley helped coach the Rams to two consecutive Mountain West Conference Championships in 2003 and 2004. The Rams earned an NCAA regional berth in 2003. A 40-win season in 2004 was the second most wins for a team in CSU history. Before becoming an assistant at Colorado State, Hadley served as an assistant at Santa Clara University from 1997-99. She helped SCU to a conference championship in 1998, a team that set a school record for wins. She also served as a student assistant at California State University-Hayward after her playing days with the institution. She was a member of the 1992 NCAA II national runner-up squad at CSU-Hayward. Hadley is also a highly regarded softball clinician and camp instructor who founded the Bay Area Softball Enterprise in Hayward, California. Other positions she has held include Personal Trainer/Nutrition Counselor for 24 Hour Fitness, National Promotions Manager for Easton Sports Inc., and Special Projects/Account Manager for San Jose Arena Management, all in California. In 1992, Hadley received her bachelor's degree in Recreation from California State University-Hayward. In 2002, she obtained her master's degree in Sport Administration from the University of Northern Colorado. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in Sports Management from the University of Northern Colorado. |
Kristina Schmallen Assistant Coach |
Kristina Schmallen is in her second season as assistant coach of the Tiger softball program. "Coach Schmallen is a tremendous asset for us as she brings a ton of playing and coaching experience to our program," said head coach Tonja Hadley. Schmallen joined the program after playing for the Arizona Heat of the National Pro Fastpitch league. The summer of 2006 was her first season with the Heat after graduating from the University of New Mexico in the spring of 2006. Schmallen played two seasons for New Mexico from 2005-06. Schmallen earned All-West Region second team honors and All-Mountain West Conference first team honors in 2006 as a senior. Before playing at the University of New Mexico, Schmallen played at Pima Community College in 2004. She was a First Team NJCAA All-American and NFCA All-American. She was a First Team All-National Tournament selection after helping lead Pima to a World Series Championship. She also garnered All-ACCAC and All-Region I honors at PCC. Prior to her sophomore year at Pima Community College, Schmallen played her freshman year at Campbell University in 2003. She was an Atlantic Sun All-Freshmen team selection. A native of Avondale, Ariz., Schmallen will work with the pitchers, catchers, and slap hitters. She has a bachelor's degree from the University of New Mexico in University Studies and an associates degree from Pima Community College in General Studies. She is working towards a master's degree in Sports Administration at Fort Hays State University. |
Mike Johnson Student Assistant Coach |
Mike Johnson is in his first season as student assistant coach of the Fort Hays State softball program. Johnson joins the staff from San Jose State University, where he served as the Graduate Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach. "Mike and I worked together as trainers and he brings with him a ton of experience in strength training and student athlete development," said head coach Tonja Hadley. Johnson also served as a personal trainer and nutrition counselor in which he designed nutrition plans and goal specific work-out programs that focused on core development. Since 1997, he has trained several collegiate All-Americans and professional athletes that currently are playing in the NFL and MLB.Prior to working at San Jose State, Johnson served in the United States Marine Corp from 1991-1995. After receiving an honorable discharge from active duty, he began focusing on a career in fitness training. He attended Cowley Community College from 1989-90, where he played third base for the Tiger baseball program. Since 1989, Johnson has also played men's ASA fastpitch softball and has competed in numerous regional and national championships. A native of Citrus Heights, Calif., his primary responsibilities will be to run the strength and conditioning program for the Tiger softball team and work with the corner infielders. Johnson will work on a bachelor's degree in Health and Human Performance at FHSU and complete his CSCS certification. |
