The summer renovations at Gross Memorial Coliseum are ongoing and recently the new floor has finished being installed and painted. The next portion of the project involves a facelift for the tartan surface track that runs along the outside of the playing court. Also receiving an upgrade are both home basketball locker rooms.
The new floor to be put in will be much more forgiving to athletes, as the old floor did not have any cushion underneath. The old floor was placed right on top of the existing concrete, thus making it one of the firmest surfaces an athlete could play on. The new surface will be like many modern playing surfaces that has a layer underneath to allow more of a springboard effect when athletes run on it, thus helping the wear and tear on athletes bodies.
The painting of the new court will be very similar to the old court, except a new larger Tiger logo will be featured at center court.
Also underway is the renovation of the men's and women's basketball locker rooms. The old, outdated locker rooms are receiving a major facelift and will be ready for use in the fall of 2011.
Outside of the coliseum, fans will eventually notice the marquee along the highway bypass back in operation, only this time with a much more modern look. A new LED screen will replace the area currently filled with the text "Fort Hays State University" and the Tiger logo. The new marquee is expected to be in operation by late August.
