Six Women's Track and Field Athletes Earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

The United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its 2012 All-Academic Team members on July 25, 2012 for women's track and field. Six Fort Hays State athletes are on the list of 317 women to earn the honor in NCAA Division II. Those athletes include Makayla McPhail, Anna Eigruber, Haley Bowser, Kyleigh Edwards, Kristen Fleharty, and Gabriela Saravia.

To earn this distinction, the athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and reached automatic or provisional qualifying standards for the NCAA Championships in either the indoor or outdoor seasons of 2012.

McPhail, a sophomore from Liberal, Kan., finished second in the nation in the javelin, earning All-American honors with a school-record throw of 160 feet, 9 inches. She was also named an Academic All-American by CoSIDA/Capital One as she continues to hold a perfect 4.0 GPA after three years of school at Fort Hays State. She is one of just five Tiger athletes overall to hold a perfect GPA in 2011-12. She was also awarded the MIAA Academic Excellence Award for the third straight year.

Eigruber, a sophomore from McPherson, Kan., earned All-American honors with an eighth-place national finish in the long jump during the indoor season. Her best effort during the indoor season was 19 feet, 1.25 inches. She was the only FHSU athlete to compete at indoor nationals.

Bowser, a freshman from Chandler, Ariz., competed in the pole vault. Her best effort in the pole vault was 11 feet, 7.75 inches during the outdoor season.

Edwards, a senior from Hutchinson, Kan., competed in the discus, hammer throw, and shot put for FHSU. Her season-best throw of 168 feet, 3 inches in the hammer throw was a provisional qualifying mark.

Fleharty, a senior from Hays, Kan., competed in several sprint events for the Tigers in 2012. She had a provisional mark of 14.02 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles during the outdoor season and a provisional mark of 8.83 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles during the indoor season.

Saravia, a sophomore from Lima, Peru, posted provisional marks in both the indoor and outdoor season in the high jump. Her indoor best was 5 feet, 5.75 inches and her outdoor best was 5 feet, 7 inches.
