Fort Hays State, the No. 8 seed in the MIAA Women's Tennis Championship Tournament, fell by a score of 5-0 to No. 1 seed Southwest Baptist in the first round on Friday (Apr. 19). With the loss, Fort Hays State plays No. 5 seed Nebraska-Kearney in a consolation match at 11 am on Saturday (Apr. 20), which will be the final match of the season.
Southwest Baptist grabbed a 3-0 lead in the match by sweeping the doubles competition and then clinched the match with a pair of straight set wins in singles play. The No. 2 doubles team of
Camille Caron-Bedard and
Caitlyn Wark had the closest doubles match, losing by a score of 8-5. The No. 1 team of
Brittney Ricci and
Melissa Skovira lost 8-3 and the No. 3 team of
Laura Johnson and
Brianna Watkins lost 8-2.
Caron-Bedard lost at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-1 to the 39th-ranked player in the nation, Fanni Varga. Varga is the top ranked singles player in the region.
Caitlyn Wark dropped her match at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-0.
