“Tiger Football is Bringing Down the Lights”

March 8th and April 19th were disassembling weekends for the “Fantasy Christmas” south of Hays. “Fantasy Christmas” was put on by the Hays Area Young Professionals, an organization of business leaders and entrepreneurs in the Hays community. Athletic Director Curtis Hammeke & Head Football Coach Kevin Verdugo assembled more than 20 members of the Tiger football program to assist in the daunting task of bringing down the Christmas lights over the two weekends. The Fort Hays State football coaches announced the signing of 22 players for the 2008 season on Wednesday afternoon. The recruiting class represents six states with ten recruits from Kansas, five from Oklahoma, four from Arizona, one from Nebraska, one from Iowa and one from Illinois. Twenty of the recruits are from high schools and two are transfers.
Football Lands Ten On MIAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll

The Fort Hays State football squad had ten members of its 2007 team named to the MIAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll. The ten members of the team earning the honor were seniors Adam Kotschwar, Ryan Taillon and Cody Witte, juniors Ty Brunswig, Cody Engle, Mitch Hayward, Brett Prior, and Jordan Stricker, and sophomores Tyrone Lewis and Macy Sexson. The All-MIAA Team for football was announced on Tuesday (November 13). The Tigers had nine players named to the all-conference team. Albert Rodriguez earned All-MIAA First Team honors. Jason Hill and Joey Cotten each earned All-MIAA second team honors. Earning All-MIAA Honorable Mention honors were Jordan Hickel, Ryan Taillon, Bryan Haynes, Ty Brunswig, Zach Scruggs and C.J. Three members of the Fort Hays State football team were selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District football teams. The selections are made by the College Sports Information Directors of America. All three members were named to the All-District Second Team for District 7 in the College Division. Tigers Hold Off Bearcats On Senior Day

The Fort Hays State football team hosted Southwest Baptist on Saturday (November 3) afternoon at Lewis Field Stadium. The Tigers were able to hold off the Bearcats down the stretch on senior day, 36-30. FHSU snapped a five-game losing skid with the win and picked up its second conference victory of the season. The Tiger football team hosted #9 ranked and conference frontrunner Northwest Missouri State on Saturday afternoon in Hays. The Tigers gave the Bearcats all they could handle, falling by a score of 17-10. The Fort Hays State football team hosted Colorado Mines Saturday night at Lewis Field Stadium in Hays. The Tigers pulled away in the second half to claim a 34-10 win over the Orediggers. The 2007 Fort Hays State Football team and coaches will be at The Mall in Hays on Saturday, August 11th to meet and greet the public. This is a great opportunity for Tiger fans to come and meet the team and enter a chance to win one of two drawings taking place and get Tiger autographs. The team will be located next to the Nex-Tech Wireless kiosk in the mall, as Nex-Tech Wireless is the sponsor for this event. Former FHSU Football Coach Jim Gilstrap Passes Away At Age 65

Oregon State football director of Support Service Jim Gilstrap, the team’s former offensive line coach, died Thursday in Corvallis. Gilstrap had been hospitalized since undergoing surgery in May for intestinal cancer. He was 65 years old. Gilstrap was the head coach of Fort Hays State from 1981-1983. Read more...

The Fort Hays State Tigers have done the lifting and conditioning. They have done all the speed work and testing drills. The Tigers have been training just as everyone else in college football has. The one thing the Tigers have done a little different is “Competitive Training.” To compete in the MIAA, the Tigers found out they needed to get stronger, play more physical, and most importantly, become mentally tougher as a team and as individuals. After placing 15 kids on the MIAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll, the Tigers followed with a record number of Athletic-Academic Award of Excellence (A.A.A.E.) winners. The Athletic-Academic Award of Excellence at Fort Hays State is an award the can be earned by any student-athlete that maintains a 3.0 grade point average during the calendar year. In Kevin Verdugo’s first year, 2005, his team set the standard with 43 A.A.A.E. winners. This past year the football team eclipsed the record with 46 winners. Thursday evening was more than the beginning of another sub-zero evening at Lewis Field. The Fort Hays State Tigers began their spring football practices. The weather outside forced the Tigers to start the spring season inside. With a frigid temperature of negative six degrees in the morning, head football coach Kevin Verdugo, commanded his troops indoors. The Fort Hays State football coaches announced the signing of 18 players for the 2007 season on Wednesday afternoon. The recruiting class represents six states with six recruits from Kansas, four from Colorado, three from Oklahoma, three from Nebraska, one from Iowa and one from Florida.
