Mitchell Means earned Athlete of the Week honors for his performance at the Newman Invitational this weekend. Means, the No. 2 ranked wrestler at 149 pounds in Division II, won his bracket at 149 pounds. In the prior weekend at the Bob Smith Open, Means placed second in the 149-pound class.
Means, a sophomore from Goddard, Kan., reeled off three straight wins to take the 149-pound class. He had a quick pin of Dexter Carter of Ouachita Baptist in 55 seconds, then beat Ky Corley of Central Oklahoma 3-2 and Ryan Maus of Truman 5-3. Means is now 10-2 overall this season.
The Tigers as a team finished fourth out of 11 teams at the event. Four other Tigers placed with Walker Clarke also winning his class (184). Derek Koehn finished third at 157, while Adam Ludwin and Kyle Johnson both finished in fourth at 125 pounds and 133 pounds, respectively.
Fort Hays State heads to the Midwest Wrestling Classic next week in Indianapolis, Ind., December 18-19.
