Makayla McPhail earned Athlete of the Week honors for his performance at the Alex Francis Classic last weekend for the women's track & field team. The Tigers as a team totaled 272.5 points to take first place by more than 200 points.
McPhail, a sophomore from Liberal, Kan., threw an automatic qualifying distance in the javelin with a throw of 152-feet, 3-inches, which is also the second-best distance nationally this season. McPhail was only six feet off Fort Hays State’s school record in the event, which is held by Regina Taylor from 1999. Her distance was almost 15 feet better than the second place effort.
The Tigers totaled 12 individual champions at the Alex Francis Classic, and FHSU travels to Hastings, Neb. this weekend for the Hastings Invitational.
