Andy Lewton has been named Athlete of the Week for his performance in a 5-2 win on the road at No. 28 Emporia State. The win was the lone victory for the Tigers in the four-game series against the Hornets. FHSU baseball is 11-15 and 9-12 in the MIAA.
Lewton, a senior from Dallas, Texas, threw a nine-inning complete game, giving him the victory and upping his season record to 3-2. Lewton allowed his only two runs of the game in the second inning, then settled in to throw seven shutout innings to follow. He allowed four of the 10 hits he scattered in the second inning.
Lewton was perfect in five of the nine innings he pitched, retiring the side in order in the first, third, fourth, seventh, and eighth. He faced the minimum amount of batters in the sixth when a double play erased a leadoff single. Lewton recorded his only strikeout of the game for the second out in the ninth inning. He worked around a pair of singles in the ninth, getting the final out on a groundball. A big key to Lewton's success was not allowing any walks.
On the season, Lewton appeared in seven games, making six starts, while pitching a team-high 35 innings. His three wins are the most on the team this season. In his 35 innings, Lewton has a 5.91 ERA with opponents batting .285. He is also second on the team with 20 strikeouts.
The Tigers are currently eighth in the MIAA with their 9-12 conference records. FHSU continues MIAA play this weekend, hosting Pittsburg State, with doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday (April 6-7) at Larks Park. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday.
