Nash Smith has been named Athlete of the Week for his performance for the Tiger baseball team. During the week, FHSU went 3-3 and is now 18-18 and 16-15 in the MIAA.
Smith was outstanding offensively for the Tigers, leading the team in most categories for the week. Smith, a senior from Jewell, Kan., hit .550 with 11 hits, three doubles, three home runs and five RBI. His slugging percentage was 1.150 and his on base percentage was .640, both team hights.
In a 5-2 win over Washburn on Tuesday, Nash totaled three RBI, including a two-run home run that tied the game at 2-2. After going up 3-2, Nash's RBI single gave the Tigers an insurance run and then he scored off a Sheldon Howell single.
During a 11-3 victory against Truman, Smith was 2-for-4 with one RBI and scored three runs. Ryan Busboom brought Smith home the first time with a three-run homer. He scored again in the four-run seventh inning and then hit a solo home run in the eighth for his only RBI of the game.
In the 6-2 Tiger win on Sunday, Smith went 2-for-3 with two singles. After reaching on a single in the third, a Mace Krol grand slam home run scored Nash. The four runs were the different in the 6-2 victory.
The Tigers host Nebraska-Kearney on Tuesday (April 17) in a nine inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Larks Park. This weekend the Tigers travel to SBU for a four-game series in Boliver, Mo.
