Carlos Linares has been named Athlete of the Week for his performance with the No. 15 Tiger men’s soccer team. The Tigers are 7-1 and 3-0 in the MIAA after defeating No. 20 Northeastern State, 3-2, in two overtimes and Harding University, 2-1. Linares was key in both wins.
Linares scored his first career goal as a Tiger in the 2-1 win. The defender hit a header in off a pass from fellow defender Patrick Brennan for a 1-0 lead early in the second half. Michael Cole scored the game-winning goal in the 64th minute for the Tigers 2-1 win.
In the 3-2 two overtime win over No. 20 NSU, Linares had the assist on the game-winning goal. His pass set up Tomas Mares in the 101st minute for the exciting win.
On the season, Linares totals one goal and two assists. His first assist also came on a game-winning goal from Mares in a 3-2 win over South Dakota School of Mines on September 1. Linares has started all eight matches and played the entire match each time. He is one of two players to start every match in Tiger history, making all 18 starts in 2011. He has only missed one half of action during his 26 starts, which is by far the most minutes played of any Tiger in the 26-game history.
The No. 15 Tigers are 7-1 and play at home on Thursday (Sept. 27) against Lindenwood at 7 p.m. at the FHSU Soccer Stadium.
