Garrett Jones has been named Athlete of the Week for his performance at the Bob Smith Open on Saturday (Dec. 1). Jones was one of five Tiger wrestlers to place, finishing second in the 125-pound class. C.J. Napier (second), Derek Koehn (second), Mitchell Means (third) and Bradley Little (fourth) also placed at the Bob Smith Open, hosted by FHSU.
Jones, a junior from Arkansas City, Kan., lost in the 125-pound championship match to take second. He dropped a close 7-6 decision to Mitch Brown of Air Force. Jones made it to the championship boat with four straight wins, including three by pin. In his opening match, Jones pinned Tim Prescott of Neosho CC at 3:16. He then won again by pin at 2:11 over Jared Steinbach of Oklahoma City. A 9-6 decision win against Luis Gurule of Colorado Mines put Jones in the semifinals where he defeated Kidd Gomez of Oklahoma City by a pin at 4:45.
The second place finish is the first time Jones has placed this season.
The Tigers start the MIAA slate on Friday (Dec. 7) with a trip to Central Oklahoma. The dual starts at 7 p.m.
