FHSU Men's Athlete of the Year

Dominique Jones, senior basketball player from Harlem, N.Y., has been selected by the FHSU Sports Information Staff as the FHSU Men's Athlete of the Year.

Jones was named a State Farm Coaches' All-American by the NABC. He also earned NABC All-District First Team and Daktronics All-South Central Region First Team honors. Jones was an All-MIAA First Team selection for the second straight year and the MIAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player helping lead Fort Hays State to its first-ever conference championship in the MIAA since joining the conference in 2006-07.

Jones participated in the Reese's Division II All-Star Game, one of 20 Division II players to be selected to the event at the site of the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.

Jones is the second All-American for the Tigers under head coach Mark Johnson and first since Tyrone Shephard earned the distinction by Division II Bulletin in 2005-06. Jones and Shephard are the only two FHSU players to earn All-American honors since both Alonzo Goldston and Sherick Simpson earned the honors in 1996-97.

Jones had a great senior campaign in which he averaged 17.9 points and 6.3 assists per game. His 592 total points in 2010-11 are the most by a player in the Mark Johnson coaching era. He ranked fourth in the nation in assists per game at the end of the regular season.

Jones' 207 assists for the season were fifth-most in a single season at FHSU, only behind all-time assist leader Raymond Lee who had 216 or more in all four of his seasons at FHSU in the 1980s. His 132 free-throws made tied him for eighth in a single season with the aforementioned Shephard.

For his two-year career, Jones nearly reached the 1,000-point scoring mark with 983 points. Jones ranks ninth in career 3-point field goals made at FHSU (132) while shooting 40.2 percent beyond the arc. His 328 3-point attempts is also ninth in school history. He ranks fifth all-time in free-throw percentage (.799) and assists (324) and fourth in assists per game (5.1).
