Tigers Pull Away From UNK in Second Half, Now 4-0

The Fort Hays State men's basketball team pulled away from Nebraska-Kearney in the second half for a 91-68 win Saturday afternoon (Nov. 20) in Hays. The Tigers held just a four-point lead at halftime, then outscored the Lopers 51-32 in the second half to move to 4-0 on the season.

The Tigers struggled shooting the ball early, but warmed to finish the first half at 41.2 percent from the field. They shot 52.9 percent in the second half to finish at 47.1 percent for the game, but was the first game this year they shot under 50 percent overall.

The Tigers excelled at the free-throw line, a place they had yet to shoot over 70 percent from this season. FHSU finished 23-of-28 at the line, hitting at an 82.1 percent clip.

The post combo of Dijon Smith and Ken Bowman each finished with a team-high 20. Smith was 8-of-11 from the field and 4-of-4 at the free-throw line, while Bowman was 7-of-9 from the field and 6-of-7 at the line.

Dominique Jones did not have his best shooting night, hitting just 5-of-14 shots from the field, but hit 7-of-9 free-throws to finish with 18 points. Bowman, Corbin Kuntzsch, and Matt Simmons all finished with a team-high six rebounds.

Four Lopers reached double figures in scoring, led by Mike Dentlinger with 17. Max Froelich had 14, followed by Michael Vandahl and Chris Deans each with 10.

The Tigers have two non-conference games remaining next week, playing at Newman University in Wichita, Kan., on Tuesday evening (Nov. 23) and then hosting Sterling College on Saturday (Nov. 27).
