14th Ranked Tigers Win MIAA Opener over Lincoln

The No. 14 ranked FHSU men's basketball team won its conference opener on Wednesday night (Dec. 1) in Hays by a score of 95-79 over Lincoln University. Six scored in double figures to push the Tigers to a 7-0 overall record and 1-0 mark in the MIAA.

The Tigers overcame a season-high 21 turnovers by shooting 55.2 percent from the field (32-of-58). They were 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from beyond the 3-point line and 75.9 percent (22-of-29) at the free-throw line.

Ken Bowman posted his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds. He was 5-of-6 from the field and 7-of-11 from the free-throw line. Dijon Smith led the Tigers, tying his career high of 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field and hitting all four of his free-throw attempts.

Dominique Jones had 18 points, hitting three 3-point field goals, and Ben Congiusta had 14 points, hitting four 3-point field goals. Corbin Kuntzsch had 11 and Moses Dayee chipped in 10.

Lincoln (2-3, 0-1 MIAA) shot the ball well in the first half, hitting at a 50 percent rate, but cooled to finish at 44.4 percent for the game. They shot just 33.3 percent from beyond the 3-point line. Pierre DeClue led the Blue Tigers with 25 points, followed by Derek Stokes with 16 and Marquez Davis with 10.

The Tigers get a stiff test on Friday night (Dec. 3), hosting Nebraska-Omaha at 7:30 pm. The Mavericks come into the game at 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the MIAA. Nebraska-Omaha received votes in the first set of national rankings this year. Following the game with UNO, the Tigers go on the road for their next three games to close out December.
