The Fort Hays State women's basketball team opened up the conference portion of their schedule with a 62-39 victory over Lincoln on Wednesday night (Dec. 1) at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
Kimber Weiser led the Tigers in scoring for the second straight game, scoring 13 points to go with six rebounds and four assists.
Kara Champlin was effective in the post once again, scoring 12 points on 6-for-7 shooting while also grabbing five rebounds.
The Fort Hays State defense was also key, forcing 20 Blue Tiger turnovers. Every player for Lincoln turned the ball over at least once. FHSU committed just 13 turnovers and assisted on 14 of their 25 made baskets. The Tigers also held Lincoln to 29.8% shooting (17-57) and just 14.3% from 3-point range (2-14).
Kaniesha Pettaway had a strong outing for the Tigers, leading the team with four assists and three steals.
Janel Durler pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and blocked a shot for the fifth straight game.
Lincoln (1-4, 0-1 MIAA) was led by 21 points and eight rebounds from Vivian Essuon. TeAira Epps played the entire game for the Blue Tigers, grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out a game-high five assists.
Fort Hays State moves to 4-1 with the victory, and are off to a 1-0 start in MIAA conference play. The Lady Tigers will host Nebraska-Omaha on Friday evening (Dec. 3) in a contest starting at 5:30 pm.
