No. 4 Lady Blues Hand Tigers First Conference Loss

Box Score

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team played their first conference road game on Wednesday night (Dec. 8) as they visited the No. 4 Washburn Lady Blues. Led by a stellar effort from Stevi Schultz, Washburn downed FHSU 71-42 to hand the Lady Tigers their first conference loss of the season.

FHSU was able to muster little offense in the first half, shooting just 28% (7-25) from the field and 14.3% (1-7) from three-point range enabling Washburn to take a 35-15 lead to the break. Only three Lady Tigers managed to put points on the board before the break.

Turnovers were a problem for FHSU, who turned the ball over 19 times compared to 13 for Washburn. The Lady Blues also outrebounded the Tigers 44 to 27, with 15 of those coming on the offensive glass. Stevi Schultz led the offensive onslaught for Washburn, scoring 26 points on 7-9 shooting, including 4-6 from beyond the arc. Schultz was also a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. Cassie Lombardino (14) and Megan Lassley (10) also hit double figures in scoring for Washburn.

Kimber Weiser led the Fort Hays State scoring with 11 points, followed by Crista Bechard with 8. No other player scored more than six points for FHSU.

The Lady Tigers drop to 5-2 on the year and 2-1 in the MIAA. They continue the current three-game conference road trip on Saturday (Dec. 11) at Missouri Western.
