The Fort Hays State women's basketball team knocked off the No. 20 ranked Tarleton State TexAnns 67-56 on Sunday (Nov. 13) in San Antonio, Texas at the St. Mary's Classic. With the win, the Lady Tigers improve to 2-0 on the young season.
Tarleton State jumped all over the Tigers early, going up 10-0 four minutes into the game after a pair of free throws by Shelby Adamson. The TexAnns would continue to lead for most of the first half until FHSU took the lead after a pair of free throws by
Crista Bechard. The teams would pull to a tie twice, but the Tigers took the lead again on free throws from
Katelyn Edwards and they would pull ahead and take a 41-30 lead at the halftime break.
The second half was all about Fort Hays State maintaining that lead, and they did so well. The lead never dropped below seven points in the second period and the Tigers would lead by as many as 14 on two separate occasions. FHSU was outshot for the second straight game, but had a huge advantage on the glass, outrebounding the TexAnns 48-31. The Lady Tigers iced the game from the free throw line, hitting 29-of-33 attempts from the stripe.
Edwards was one of four FHSU players to score in double figures, leading the way with game highs of 20 points and 13 rebounds.
Traci Keyser scored 17 points and was 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Senior guards Bechard and
Kimber Weiser added 10 apiece for the Tigers, who finished 17-for-61 (27.9%) from the field and 4-for-16 (25%) from 3-point range.
Tarleton State was led by 17 points and seven rebounds from Shelby Adamson as they fell to 0-2 on the year.
With the win, the Lady Tigers improve to 2-0 for the third consecutive season and they gained their third straight win when facing a ranked opponent, dating back to late last season. They will return to action on Wednesday (Nov. 16) in the home opener against Tabor College. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.
