The FHSU men's basketball team cruised to an 85-50 win in its home opener against Bethany College (Kan.) Tuesday (Nov. 15) evening in Hays. The Tigers shot 50 percent from the field and nearly doubled up the Swedes in shot attempts in the game.
Karron McKenzie led FHSU and all scorers with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. He buried two 3-point field goals and was 1-of-2 at the free-throw line.
Tyrone Phillips added 13 off the bench and
Kendrick Morse had 12.
Matt Simmons set a new career high in rebounds with 17 and is averaging 16.5 per game after the first two contests. He pulled down 16 in the season opener at Nebraska-Kearney.
Every Tiger scored in the game except for
Matt Buhler, but Buhler recorded an assist in his limited action.
Chase Waldman scored eight points in just three minutes of action at the end of the game.
Even with the high shooting percentage overall, the Tigers were just 30.3 percent beyond the 3-point line (10-of-33) and a poor 38.5 percent at the free-throw line (5-of-13).
The Tigers held Bethany to just 37.8 percent shooting for the game. Bethany also struggled at the free-throw line, hitting just 18-of-33 attempts (54.5 percent). Chris Dean was the only Bethany player to reach double figures with 10 points.
The Tigers return to action on Friday when they host Central Christian College at 7:30 pm, which follows the women's game against Central Christian.
