Karron McKenzie and
Matt Simmons each recorded double-doubles in points and rebounds in a 76-52 win over Central Christian (Kan.) on Friday (Nov. 18) in Hays. Fort Hays State improved to 3-0 on the season with the win.
Tyrone Phillips led the way for FHSU with 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field. He buried three 3-point field goals and was 3-of-4 at the free-throw line.
Karron McKenzie finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while
Matt Simmons had 10 points and 11 rebounds. It was the first double-double for McKenzie as a Tiger, while it was Simmons' second and first of this season.
The Tigers led by 16 at halftime and held Central Christian at bay in the second half. FHSU shot 48.4 percent from the field and held Central Christian to 37.5 percent shooting. The Tigers forced 23 turnovers out of Central Christian, 14 on steals. Simmons had a team-high four steals, four blocked shots, and five assists to go with his double-double.
Kaelon Gary led Central Christian with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field. He also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
Fort Hays State will get a solid test against their second NCAA Division II opponent of the season on Tuesday (Nov. 22) when Newman University comes to Hays. Game time is set for 7 pm at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
