Lady Tigers Use Strong Second Half to Down Missouri Western

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team rebounded from their first loss of the season with a 70-48 victory over Missouri Western on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 10) at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Lady Tigers hit seven three point field goals in the second half and ran away with the game after leading by only six at the break.

Fort Hays State was just 2-9 from three point range in the first half and they shot 30.3% from the field to take a 27-21 lead to the break. A 14-4 run to open the half gave the Lady Tigers a 41-25 lead with 15:36 to play and the lead never dropped into single digits the rest of the way. FHSU had a huge advantage on the glass, outrebounding Missouri Western 57-33 ahile outshooting the Griffons 34.8% (23-66) to 27.9% (17-61). Fort Hays State also shot the ball well from the free throw line, hitting 15-17 (88.2%) attempts.

Melissa Nelson, coming off the bench for the first time all season, led FHSU with 15 points. She was 5-12 from the field and 3-8 from long range and she added a season-high seven rebounds. Katelyn Edwards recorded her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Traci Keyser was also in double figures, scoring 13 points to go along with six rebounds and three steals.

Missouri Western got 20 points from the MIAA's leading scorer Jessica Koch while Brittany Griswold added 10. The Griffons are now 2-6 on the year and 0-4 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State improves to 8-1 on the season and 2-1 in MIAA. The Lady Tigers head to Kearney, Neb. on Tuesday (Dec. 13) to face Nebraska-Kearney at 6:00 pm.
