Katelyn Edwards and
Kelsie Sorenson all put up season-highs in points in leading the Fort Hays State women's basketball team to an 81-53 win over Doane College on Friday evening (Dec. 30) at Gross Memorial Coliseum. Edwards led the way with 21 points and seven rebounds to lead the Lady Tigers to their fourth straight win and 11th of the season.
Traci Keyser had 16 and tied a season-high with seven rebounds, while Brown scored 15 and Sorenson had 11.
The teams traded baskets early on before Fort Hays State used a 15-5 run to break the game open at 19-9 with 13:10 to play in the first half. Doane answered with back-to-back three pointers and they pulled to within one at 22-21 on a bucket from Cheryl Braithwait with 6:56 to play in the half. The Lady Tigers finished the half on a 17-6 run, capped off by a three pointer from Brown, and took a 39-27 lead to the break.
Fort Hays State came out of the break and opened the second half with a 7-2 run, which included five points from Edwards and put the Lady Tigers up 46-29 with 17:54 to play in the game. The lead was further extended after FHSU got three's from
Melissa Nelson and
Kimber Weiser gave them a 58-34 lead. Doane would battle back from the stripe in the second half, where they 10-13 for the game. It would not be enough, however, as the Lady Tigers continued to hit shots from the outside and took their biggest lead at 76-45 with 2:35 to play following Keyser's only three pointer of the game.
Doane College counted the game as an exhibition, so the Tigers remain 7-5 on the year. They were led by 14 points from Madara Upeniece, who scored 14 points, including 6-6 free throw shooting. Morgan Dubas chipped in 10 points for Doane, who turned the ball over 22 times and shot 35.7% (20-56) from the field.
Fort Hays State improves to 11-1 for just the third time in school history. The Lady Tigers have little recovery time before returning to MIAA play on Monday (Jan. 2) at Truman. Game time is set for 1:00 from Kirksville, Mo.
