Fort Hays State, ranked No. 10 in the latest NCAA Division II national rankings, hosts Washburn on Wednesday night (Dec. 7) at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm, which follows the women's game at 5:30 pm. FHSU enters at 7-0 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA, while Washburn is 5-3 overall and 0-1 in the MIAA.
This is the MIAA home opener for the Tigers, who picked up a 13-point win in their first MIAA game of the season at Lincoln last week. Fort Hays State is looking to extend a four-game win streak overall against the Ichabods and six-game win streak against the Ichabods in Hays. Washburn is coming off a loss at Northwest Missouri State in its first MIAA game of the season this past Saturday.
Karron McKenzie leads the Tigers in scoring at 16.3 points per game. He recorded the second double-double at FHSU last week with a career-high 26 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 assists in the win at Lincoln. He has scored in double figures in all seven games for the Tigers this year.
Matt Simmons has been huge on the boards for FHSU so far, averaging 11.7 rebounds per game. He leads the conference in rebounding and assist/turnover ratio. He leads FHSU in assists averaging 3.6 per game. He is also doing well on offense, averaging 8.4 points per game.
Tyrone Phillips continues to shoot the ball at a high rate at the shooting guard position. Phillips is averaging 14.4 points per game while shooting 56.7 percent from the field. He has reached double figures in scoring in all but one game.
Kendrick Morse is also averaging double figures in scoring. The Tiger point guard is averaging 11.3 points per game and is just one assist short of tying
