The Lady Tigers fell victim to another late run by their opponent on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 12) at Central Missouri. The Jennies used a 14-1 run midway through the second half to take the lead for good and go on to an 80-63 win. Fort Hays State dropped to 11-11 overall and 8-10 in the MIAA.
This game was crucial since the teams were tied for eighth heading into the game. The loss drops FHSU into ninth for the time being, now on the outside looking in for a berth to the MIAA Tournament. Only four games remain in the season and every one will be crucial for the Lady Tigers.
Traci Keyser led FHSU with 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting, which included four 3-point field goals, and a 4-of-4 effort at the free-throw line.
Crista Bechard also reached double figures with 14 points, followed by
Kara McFarland with 11 and
Janel Durler with 10.
Free-throw shooting was a big key for the Jennies, hitting 21-of-24 attempts. Erin Redmond led UCM with 19 points. She was 7-of-8 at the line. Kara Fleming, who was 6-of-7 at the line, scoring 15 points. Nicole Caddell had 14 and went a perfect 6-of-6 at the line. Rebecca Roberts (13) and Alyssa Rhodes (10) also reached double figures. Central Missouri outshot FHSU 51 percent to 36.1 percent from the field for the game.
The Lady Tigers host Southwest Baptist and Missouri Southern in the final two home games of the season next week at Gross Memorial Coliseum. They tipoff against SBU on Wednesday evening at 5:30 pm, then play MSSU on Saturday at 2 pm.
