Lady Tigers Roll Past Southwest Baptist

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team cruised to a 78-58 victory over Southwest Baptist on Wednesday evening (Feb. 16) at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Lady Tigers had four players score in double figures, and got a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds from Kara Champlin.

Fort Hays State (12-11, 9-10 MIAA) jumped on top of the Bearcats early and would never look back. Southwest Baptist never held a lead in the game, and FHSU pushed the lead to as high as 19 points in the first half. The margin was 16 at halftime when the Lady Tigers led 38-22.

The second half was much of the same, with Southwest Baptist never getting closer than 14 points in the half. The Lady Tigers would take their biggest lead of the game at 72-41 on a 3-pointer from Shelby Hillman with 4:24 to play. Many of the Fort Hays State reserves played the last few minutes of the game, and SBU was able to cut the ending deficit to 78-58.

Traci Keyser led the Lady Tigers with 17 points, and Champlin, Crista Bechard and Rhys Pihl all chipped in 12. In all, 10 players scored for FHSU, who had one of their better shooting nights in conference play at 41.5% (27-65). 

Jaquavia Couch had 14 points to lead Southwest Baptist, followed by a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds from LaKendra Smith. Tanis Spani also contributed 11 points for the Bearcats, who now fall to 8-15, and 5-14 in MIAA play.

Fort Hays State will be at home for the final time this season on Saturday (Feb. 19) when they take on Missouri Southern. Game time is set for 2:00 pm.
