Box Score
The No. 17 ranked Tigers picked up a big road win at Pittsburg State Wednesday evening (Feb. 23) by a score of 70-63.
Moses Dayee buried a 3-point shot with the Tigers up just two with 30 seconds remaining to help deliver the Tigers to victory. The Tigers lock up the No. 2 seed in the MIAA Tournament with the win, moving to 22-5 overall and 16-5 in the MIAA.
Dayee's shot was huge, as it held off a late rally by the Gorillas. A pair of free-throws by Chris Ware of PSU cut the lead to five with 1:27 remaining and then an Eric Ray 3-point field goal pulled PSU within two with just under a minute to play.
Dominique Jones shelled out his game-high seventh assist of the game on the Dayee bomb. After a defensive stop by the Tigers on the other end, Dayee put the game away with a pair of free-throws. He finished with 13 points off the bench for the Tigers, going 3-of-6 beyond the arc and 4-of-4 at the free-throw line.
Ken Bowman, who had a big first half (11 points) for the Tigers, finished with a team-high 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting. He also converted his only free-throw attempt.
Dominique Jones added 13, which included one 3-point field goal and two key free-throws down the stretch.
The Tigers had to grind out the win shooting just 41 percent from the field, well below their 51.1 percent mark as a team entering the game. They did it with defense, holding PSU to 36.7 percent shooting on the night.
Eric Ray led the Pittsburg State effort with 19 points, 14 of which came in the first half. Chris Ware added 10.
Fort Hays State will finish alone in second place in the MIAA, after Washburn and Nebraska-Omaha both lost on Wednesday evening. Missouri Southern locked up the regular season MIAA title by defeating UNO. Emporia State sealed an MIAA Tournament spot with its win at Washburn.
The Tigers close out the regular season schedule on Saturday at Emporia State. Game time is set for 7:30 pm. As the No. 2 seed in the MIAA Tournament, the Tigers will play at 6 pm next Thursday in the opening round.
