The FHSU men's basketball team, ranked No. 23 in the latest national poll, visits Northwest Missouri State on Saturday (Jan. 28). Northwest Missouri is tied for first place in the MIAA at 9-3 with Central Missouri, while Fort Hays State is tied for fifth at 7-4 in the conference. The Bearcats enter the game 15-3 overall, while the Tigers are 13-4 overall. The game is being televised on the
MIAA Network. Tipoff is set for 3 pm.
Fort Hays State won the meeting between the teams earlier this season in Hays by a score of 83-64 on December 17. That was the first loss of the season for the Bearcats and both teams were 9-1 overall after that game. Northwest Missouri State continues to receive votes in the latest national poll and have cracked the rankings one time already this year.
Northwest Missouri State and Central Missouri broke free of a three-way tie for first in the MIAA on Wednesday night. Northwest Missouri State won at Washburn, while Central Missouri won at No. 14 Missouri Southern. Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State are currently tied for third in the MIAA at 8-4, while FHSU and Washburn are tied for fifth at 7-4.
This game begins at three-game road swing for the Tigers. The Tigers follow this game with a contest at Missouri Western on Monday night (Jan. 30). FHSU will finish the swing at Washburn on Saturday, Feb. 4. After that, the Tigers play four of their last six regular season games at home. Fort Hays State enters Saturday on a three-game win streak.
Northwest Missouri just completed a three-game road swing 2-1, winning their last two contests of that stretch. After losing at Missouri Southern on January 18, the Bearcats collected wins at Emporia State and Washburn to remain atop the conference standings.
Karron McKenzie and
Tyrone Phillips are pacing the scoring attack for FHSU. McKenzie averages 12.2 points per game, while Phillips averages 12.1.
Moses Dayee also averages double figures at 10.3 points per game.
Matt Simmons continues to lead the MIAA in rebounding at 9.9 per game and blocked shots at 1.8 per game.
