The Tigers look to bounce back from a tough loss last week in the MIAA Television Network Game of the Week on Saturday (Oct. 13) at Southwest Baptist. Both teams enter the game at 1-5 overall and 1-5 in the MIAA.
Fort Hays State fell to Lindenwood in Hays by a score of 20-17 last week and had a golden opportunity to win the game late, moving the ball all the way to the Lindenwood 4-yardline with about a minute and a half remaining in the game. However, an interception on the next play sealed the win for the visiting Lions. The loss kept FHSU winless at home this year.
The Tigers will look for their second road win of the season on Saturday at Southwest Baptist. Southwest Baptist holds a 2-1 edge in the all-time series and this is the first conference meeting between the teams since 2007. The Tigers and Bearcats met last year in Hays in non-conference, as the Bearcats played an independent schedule over the last few years before retuning to the MIAA this year. SBU won last year 30-28. The winning team in this meeting has always scored at least 30 points. Fort Hays State's lone win in the series was in 2007 in Hays by a score of 36-30. The Tigers lost their only meeting with the Bearcats in Bolivar in 2006.
Treveon Albert has emerged as an all-around threat for the Tiger offense over the last two weeks. He had 153 all-purpose yards in the win at Truman two weeks ago and 133 all-purpose yards against Lindenwood last week. He produced his first 100-yard rushing game of the season last week with 106 on 23 carries. He has 99 receiving yards on 10 catches over the last two games. Albert in now the team leader in all-purpose yards per game, averaging 90.2.
Layton Hickel leads the Tiger defense with 52 tackles, producing his third straight game with 10 or more tackles last week.
Austin Hubert is just one tackle behind with 51 and
A.J. Woodall has 49. Hickel and Woodall both have three games this year with 10 or more tackles. Hickel and Hubert have each reached 14 tackles in a game this year.
Defensive back
Keke Paul had a great night for the Tigers against Lindenwood. His only kick return of the game went 59 yards and he also had an interception in the endzone that he returned 60 yards. Paul currently ranks 18th in NCAA Division II in kickoff return average at 28.5 yards per return.
