Kate Lehman helped the No. 11 Fort Hays State women's basketball team defeat Oklahoma-Panhandle State, 87-54, on the road in Goodwell, Okla. on Saturday (Dec. 15). The Tigers upped their record to 9-0, continuing their best start in school history.
The Tigers jumped on the Aggies early, scoring the first 11 points to take an 11-0 lead at the 17:56 mark of the first half. Senior
Traci Keyser knocked down two 3-pointers during the opening run. Fort Hays pushed the margin to as high as 22 in the first half, 38-16, with 4:42 remaining. At the half, the Tigers led 42-22.
With FHSU up by 17 at 58-41 midway through the second half, the Tigers went on a 12-1 run to go up 70-42 with 6:18 left in the contest. The lead increased to as much as 35 as the Tigers won 87-54.
Edwards and Lehman both finished the game with double-doubles. Edwards totaled a game-high 18 points and added 12 rebounds. Lehman scored 16 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. She blocked a game-high five shots.
Melissa Nelson had a team-high six assists.
The Aggies were led by Whitley Coca with team-highs in points (16), rebounds (eight) and assists (six).
The Tigers shot 28-76 (36.8 percent) from the field, and 6-19 (31.6 percent) from behind the 3-point line. The Aggies shot 35.1 percent (20-57) and 29.4 percent (5-17) from behind the arc.
FHSU returns home for a non-conference game against South Dakota School of Mines on Dec. 29 at 2 p.m. at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
