The Fort Hays State men's basketball team hosts Emporia State for the final regular season game of 2011-12 on Saturday (Feb. 25) at 8 pm. Five seniors on this year's squad will be honored prior to the game. FHSU enters the game at 17-8 overall and 11-8 in the MIAA, while ESU is 9-16 overall and 5-14 in the MIAA.
The Tigers enter the game tied with Southwest Baptist in the MIAA standings. SBU plays at Missouri Western Saturday afternoon. If SBU loses and FHSU wins on Saturday, FHSU will claim the No. 5 seed in the MIAA Tournament. However, if SBU wins, the Tigers will be the No. 6 seed regardless of the outcome against ESU. SBU has the two-way tiebreaker over FHSU for seeding in the tournament by virtue of a pair of wins over FHSU this season.
FHSU is looking to extend their four-game home win streak over the rival Hornets, which dates back to the 2007-08 season. The Tigers have won the last two meetings between the teams, one which went to overtime in Emporia earlier this season and a three-point win at the MIAA Tournament last year in Kansas City.
The Tigers are led by
Karron McKenzie at 11.9 points per game, followed by
Moses Dayee at 11.5 per game.
Kendrick Morse is also in double figures at 10.4 points per game.
Matt Simmons continues to lead the MIAA in rebounds (10.0 per game) and blocked shots (2.0 per game) entering Saturday. McKenzie, Dayee and Simmons are among the seniors being honored before the game, along with
Sean Dreiling and
KC Rodenburg.
