The Fort Hays State women's basketball team finished up a three-game road trip on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 4) in Topeka against No. 11 Washburn. The Lady Tigers stayed close for most of the game before Washburn pulled ahead and took the victory 75-55.
Kate Lehman blocked four shots in the game, giving her 66 blocks for the year and a new single-season FHSU record, surpassing Erica Biel's previous record of 64.
After falling behind by as many as nine in the first half, Fort Hays State used a 10-3 run to pull within two at 22-20 with 3:30 to play in the half. Washburn closed the half on a 10-0 run of their own and went into the break with a 32-20 lead that they would not relinquish. The Lady Blues went on to shoot 62.5% (20-of-32) in the second half and outscored FHSU 43-35 in the half en route to the 75-55 victory.
Lehman finished with a game-high 17 points and eight rebounds in the game while
Katelyn Edwards recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Nobody else for FHSU was able to get much going at the offensive end as the Lady Tigers were held to 35.0% (21-of-60) shooting from the field and hit just 4-of-15 (26.7%) shots from long range.
Washburn had five players score in double figures, with nobody scoring more than 13, as they took their ninth consecutive victory over FHSU in Topeka. The Lady Blues improve to 20-3 (13-1 MIAA) on the year with the win and they have now won 11 consecutive games. Ebonie Williams led the Lady Blues with 13 points while Cassie Lombardino and Stevi Schultz each had 12.
Fort Hays State has now lost five of their last six games and they fall to 15-7 (7-7 MIAA) on the year. The Lady Tigers return home on Wednesday (Feb. 8) to face Truman at 5:30 p.m. The game is crucial for FHSU since they sit a half-game above the Bulldogs in the MIAA standings.
