Five Tigers Score in 7-0 Win over SBU

Box Score Five Fort Hays State Tigers scored in a 7-0 win over Southwest Baptist on Saturday (Sept 29) afternoon at the FHSU Soccer Stadium in Hays. No. 9 FHSU moved to 8-2 and 4-1 in the MIAA with the dominating win. The seven goals are the most in the Tigers' short two-year history. Tomas Mares led the Tigers with two goals and two assists.

Mares scored the first of his two goals on a penalty kick in the eighth minute. The Tigers went up 2-0 in the 21st minute as Michael Cole scored off a ball from Mares at the top of the box. The 2-0 lead held into the halftime break.

The Tigers poured it on early in the second half, scoring five goals in a 16 minute span to pull out to the 7-0 advantage. Emmanuel Brown scored his first career Tiger goal on what looked like a cross attempt from 40 yards out on the left side in the 54th minute. The SBU keeper misplayed the cross as the ball went in on the right side of the goal. Austin Clifton scored in the 60th minute on a shot from the top of the box for a 4-0 Tiger lead. Still in the 60th minute, Tanner Brock hit a strike from about 20 yards that went left of the SBU keeper.

Just five minutes later, Clifton scored his second goal on another shot from the top of the box with the assist going to Mares, his second of the match. Mares closed out the Tiger scoring in the 70th minute with Diego Cabral picking up the assist.

In the second half, the Tigers totaled 19 shots to two for the Bearcats. FHSU held a 27-7 shot advantage in the match.

Kent Freund went all 90 minutes in goal for the Tigers, getting the shutout win and making four saves.

Fort Hays State continues its homestand with two non-conference matches next weekend. The Tigers play Eastern New Mexico on Friday (Oct. 5) at 2 p.m. at the FHSU Soccer Stadium.
