No. 21 Lady Tigers Halt Three-Game Skid; Defeat SBU 64-55

The 21st-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team stopped its three-game losing streak with a 64-55 win over Southwest Baptist on Wednesday evening (Jan. 16) in Hays. With the win, FHSU moved to 11-3 overall and 3-3 in the MIAA. Southwest Baptist dropped to 6-9 overall and 1-6 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State steadily pulled away in the first half, leading by as many as 19 points before holding a 17-point halftime lead. However, Southwest Baptist made the second half interesting as it went on a 7-0 run to open the half and whittled away at the FHSU lead cutting it inside 10 with 10:26 remaining. The Bearcats could not get closer than eight until a 3-point field goal with 2:31 remaining pulled them within five. A Tera Ingalsbe layup with 1:09 remaining stopped the sudden Bearcat run and FHSU held on for the nine-point win.

FHSU finished just 37.5 percent from the field overall after shooting 45.7 percent in the first half. FHSU struggled at 27.6 percent in the second half. FHSU also struggled from beyond the 3-point line, just 21.1 percent overall. FHSU held SBU to 35.1 percent overall from the field and 35.3 percent beyond the 3-point line.

Katelyn Edwards was the only Lady Tiger to reach double figures in scoring with 11 points on a balanced scoring night for FHSU. Kate Lehman and Keriann Shaw each added nine points. Ingalsbe finished with eight. Edwards and Lehman tied for the team lead in rebounds, each with eight, and Lehman added four blocked shots in the game. Edwards also led in assists with five.

Southwest Baptist received the majority of its scoring from its starters. Brittney Dukes finished with 17, Jacqui Zelenka had 12, and Chasity Prince added 11. Zelenka finished with a double-double, adding a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Lady Tigers now gear up for a tough road match-up with No. 24 ranked Pittsburg State in Pittsburg on Saturday (Jan. 19). Game time is set for 1:30 pm in Pittsburg, Kan.
