Lehman's Monster Effort Not Enough as FHSU Women Drop Second Straight

Box Score

The 10th-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team dropped its second consecutive game on Saturday, falling 69-54 at Emporia State. Kate Lehman had 25 points, 16 rebounds, and seven blocked shots, but it was not enough to lead the Lady Tigers to victory as they fell to 10-2 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA. Emporia State moved to 6-5 overall and 1-2 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State held a 33-26 halftime lead, but went ice-cold from the field in the second half. The Lady Tigers shot just 16.1 percent from the field in the second half and a nine-point lead evaporated as ESU went on an 18-3 run to take a six-point lead. FHSU trimmed the lead back to three, but ESU would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way. Up five, a 9-0 run by the Hornets from the 6:04 to 3:18 marks of the second half put the game away pushing the deficit into double digits.

Lehman started the game 8-of-8 from the field, but finished 9-of-16. She had 19 points in the first half and just six in the second. The 25 points and 16 rebounds were season highs for Lehman. It was the fifth double-double of the season for Lehman. She scored the first 17 points of the game for FHSU. Katelyn Edwards also finished in double figures with 13 points.

Laura Patrick led ESU in scoring with 18 points. Rachel Hanf added 11 and Jocelyn Cummings and Desiree Wylie each had 10.

Fort Hays State faces another stiff test this coming Thursday when it hosts No. 6 Washburn at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The game is set to start at 5:30 pm. Both FHSU and Washburn lost two games with their current rankings.
