Fort Hays State picked up its first win of the 2013 season by a score of 34-17 over William Jewell College on Saturday (Oct. 5) at Lewis Field Stadium in Hays on Homecoming. The Tigers moved to 1-4 overall with the win, while William Jewell dropped to 1-4.
Fort Hays State jumped ahead 7-0 at the 9:02 mark of the first quarter on a
Treveon Albert 2-yard touchdown run. He also had a 37-yard run on the drive.
William Jewell answered back with a 7-yard touchdown pass, which capped a long 13-play, 75-yard drive that consumed 7:02 on the clock. The Cardinals recovered a loose ball on the ensuing kickoff, which set up a Warren Frevert 40-yard field goal early in the second quarter to take a 10-7 lead.
That would be the only lead William Jewell would enjoy on the evening as Albert had a 3-yard touchdown run to put the Tigers back up 14-10 at the 6:26 mark. That capped an 11-play, 80-yard drive by the Tigers that took 5:23.
Edward Smith punched in another touchdown from one yard out, giving the Tigers a 21-10 lead at halftime.
The Tigers extended the lead to 28-10 at the 6:36 mark of the third quarter on a 30-yard touchdown run by
Edward Smith. But a 26-yard touchdown run by the Cardinals' DJ Balazs late in the third quarter would trim the lead back to 11.
Drew O'Brien tacked on a pair of field goals for FHSU in the fourth quarter from 25 and 38 yards to produce the final of 34-17. Interceptions by
Zach Nash and
Shane Smith in the fourth kept the Cardinals from any hope of a comeback effort.
Andre Smith posted his second 100-yard rushing game of the season, going for 118 yards on 19 carries. Albert added 76 yards on the ground with two touchdowns and
Edward Smith had 52 yards rushing with two touchdowns. As a team, the Tigers rushed for 266 yards.
Albert finished 8-of-17 passing for 112 yards.
Marshall Musil was the leading target on the night with three catches for 47 yards.
Justin McPhail led FHSU in tackles with eight.
Micheal Jordan joined Nash and Smith for Fort Hays State's three interceptions in the game.
DJ Balazs led William Jewell in rushing with 55 yards and he added 58 yards passing. Trey Talley led the Cardinals in tackles with 10.
Fort Hays State goes on the road next weekend to Lindenwood in St. Charles, Mo. Kickoff is set for 1:30 pm on Saturday (Oct. 12).
