The 15th-ranked Fort Hays State men's basketball team hits the road for a pair of tough road games to open MIAA play, traveling to Central Missouri and Missouri Western. FHSU plays at Central Missouri Thursday at 7:30 pm, then at Missouri Western on Saturday at 3:30 pm. FHSU enters with a record of 7-0, while Central Missouri is 6-1 and Missouri Western is 5-3.
Warrensburg and St. Joseph have been difficult places to play for FHSU since joining the MIAA in 2006-07. The Tigers are just 1-5 against Central Missouri in Warrensburg since joining the MIAA, the only win occurring in 2009-10 when the Tigers, ranked No. 13, knocked off a No. 1 ranked Central Missouri team. Central Missouri continues to receive votes in the latest NABC Top 25 Poll. Also, five of the seven games against Missouri Western in St. Joseph since joining the MIAA were decided by six points or less with three of those going to the Griffons (two by just one point). That doesn't include last year's game that went to overtime the Tigers eventually won by 10.
Dwayne Brunson leads FHSU in scoring and rebounding, averaging a double-double of 19.9 points and 10.0 rebounds per game.
Craig Nicholson is second on the team in scoring at 15.4 points per game and leads NCAA Division II in assists per game (9.3). Three other players for the Tigers are averaging double figures in scoring, including
Carson Konrade at 13.3 points,
Tomislav Gabric at 10.6 points, and
James Fleming at 10.1 points. Konrade leads the MIAA in 3-point field goals made per game (3.1).
