Third-Ranked Bearcats Defeat Tigers 49-14

Fort Hays State fell to third-ranked Northwest Missouri State by a score of 49-14 in Hays on Saturday evening (Sept. 21). The Bearcats put the game away with 28 points in the second quarter and led 42-7 at halftime. The teams scored just seven points each after the break. Fort Hays State is now 0-3 overall and 0-3 in the MIAA. Northwest Missouri improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA.

The Tigers did have success moving the ball on offense with 365 yards of total offense, but turnovers led to two touchdowns for the Bearcats.

Down 21-0, the Tigers got on the board at 11:34 in the second quarter with a Treveon Albert 4-yard touchdown run. Andre Smith had a big rush of 34 yards on the drive, his longest run of the night. Smith went on to finish with 107 yards rushing. The Tigers provided the last score of the game at 8:34 in the third quarter on a 10-yard touchdown run by Edward Smith.

The powerful Bearcat offense chewed off 519 total yards in the game. NWMSU had 282 yards rushing, led by Robert Burton with 95. Billy Creason had just 26 rushing yards, but scored three touchdowns on the ground. The Bearcats also had 237 yards through the air, led by Trevor Adams with 165 yards and two touchdowns, going 13-of-15.

Treveon Albert finished with 158 yards passing, going 14-of-22. Tanner Hageman led FHSU in receiving yards with 63 on three catches. Shane Smith led the Tiger defense in tackles with 10.

The Tigers face another top-10 nationally ranked team next week in No. 6 Missouri Western, which enters the match-up at 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA. Game time is set for 6 pm in St. Joseph, Mo.
