Fort Hays State Women's Soccer defeated Northeastern State, 1-0, on Friday (Oct. 10) in a Homecoming weekend matchup at FHSU Soccer Stadium.
Â
The Tigers (6-4-1, 4-2-1 MIAA) have now won three of their last four, shutting out opponents in all three victories.
Â
A physical battle where fouls outnumbered shots for both teams, FHSU's defense played a key role in the win, limiting the RiverHawks to six shots over the 90 minutes of play. Offensively, the Tigers controlled the ball for a majority of the game, taking 11 shots with seven on goal.
Â
Inside 15 minutes to play in regulation,
Kelsey Steffens broke the tie with her fourth goal of the season.Â
Gabrielle Makatura fired a long cross from near midfield, leading Steffens towards the upper left corner of the box. NSU goalkeeper Jordan Woodruff charged out of the box to stop the attack, but Steffens beat the keeper and found the net from around 20 yards out.
Â
The goal was Steffens' fourth of the season, tied for the team-high, while Makatura had her second assist of the year.
Â
Goalkeeper
Kristen Thompson picked up her sixth shutout of the season, stopping three shots on goal with only six total shots faced. After Steffens' goal, Thompson tallied what arguably was her biggest save of the night. On a breakaway play for NSU, the RiverHawks' Anastasia Robinson took a shot from the right side of the box, but Thompson's diving save kept the shutout intact.

FHSU closes out the weekend on Sunday (Oct. 12) versus Central Oklahoma. Game time is set for Noon.
