Fort Hays State men's soccer matched its single-match school record for goals in an 8-3 win over Southern Nazarene on Saturday (Oct. 11) in Hays. The Tigers moved to 8-3-1 overall and 5-2 in the MIAA, winning their sixth-straight match, while the Crimson Storm fell to 3-9 overall and 2-5 in the MIAA.
Neither team could find much offense in the first 20 minutes, but
Maurizio Costa broke through for the Tigers in the 24th minute. On a through pass from
Diego Cabral, Costa made a good run past the defense and beat the SNU keeper to the low left corner of the net.
Fort Hays State would go on to net two more goals in the first half, both by
Joe Albright, to take a 3-0 lead at halftime. His first was a header in the middle of the box off a crossing pass from Cabral in the 35th minute. The next was in the 43rd minute when he stole a pass near the top of the box and then beat the goalkeeper one-on-one.
Costa put in his second goal of the match in the 48th minute on assists from
Addison Pauler and
David Lucio. He took the shot from the center of the box off a cross from Pauler.
The Crimson Storm struck twice quickly after halftime to cut the lead in half, both goals by Edgar Pineda in the 49th and 56th minutes.
In the 66th minute, Costa netted a hat trick for the match, using a little fancy footwork in the process. Off a through pass from Cabral, he flipped the ball over an outstretched goalkeeper at the top of the box and then finished the run by burying the ball in an empty net, making it 5-2. Costa tied the school record for goals in a match, matching
Daniel Peralta's three against Harding in 2012.
Lucio got in on the scoring act in the 69th minute as he was standing at the far post on a crossing pass from
Tanner Brock, after Cabral put the ball in play on a corner kick. Brock's pass found Lucio foot as he tapped the ball just inside the right post, making it 6-2. Brock netted a goal 48 seconds later to make it 7-2, striking a crossing pass out of the air with his left foot that stayed inside the right post. The pass came in from Cabral, who recorded his fifth assist of the match, a new school record. He broke his old mark of three in a match, set in 2012 also against Southern Nazarene.
Javier Caballeros added a goal for SNU a minute following Brock's goal to make it 7-3, but FHSU was not quite done yet as
Brian Ness capped the scoring in the 84th minute on a crossing pass from
Austin Clifton for the final count of 8-3.
Fort Hays State tied its record for goals in a match. The eight goals matched its output against Lindenwood two weeks ago in an 8-0 victory in Hays.
The Tigers go on the road for their next three matches, all in conference play. They head to Southwest Baptist and Harding next week.
