Kate Lehman recorded her third career triple-double as Fort Hays State picked up a dominant 102-49 victory over Kansas Wesleyan on Tuesday (Dec. 16).
Lehman (31 points, 11 blocks, 10 rebounds) was one of three Tigers in double-digits, joining
Chelsea Mason (18 points) and
Elle Stein (10 points) as the team's top scorers, carrying FHSU (9-1) to its eighth straight victory.
As a team, FHSU hit 63.5 percent of its field goals but struggled from beyond the arc, making just 2-of-15 (13.3 percent). At the line, FHSU was 20-of-30 (66.7 percent), shooting below the 70 percent mark for the fourth time this year.
All 14 Tigers played in the game, with all but two finding their way into the scoring column. FHSU combined for 26 assists on the day – led by Kacperska's seven assists (career-high). Beth Bohuslavsky dished out five assists while scoring seven points.
In the front court, Paige Lunsford pulled down six rebounds while continuing her hot shooting from the charity stripe (2-for-2). She is now 13-of-14 (92.8 percent) for the season. Lehman moved to fourth on the NCAA Division II career blocks list, passing Brittney Kroon (Seattle Pacific, 2003-06) during the game. She now has 424 blocks for her career. The Tigers stormed out to a 24-3 lead in the opening seven minutes, breaking off a burst of 18 unanswered after a three-pointer by KWU put the Coyotes on the board at 18:05. Lehman found her way to double-digits in the first 4:14 of the game, scoring 13 points as part of the Tigers opening sprint before a layup by KWU's Jenna Farris stopped the Tigers run at 12:56. Less than a minute later, however Mason's layup sparked the Tigers on another run (9-0) that lasted just under two minutes and moved FHSU to a 33-5 lead at 10:57.
At the half, FHSU led KWU by 34 (61-27), heading to the locker rooms after a buzzer beating layup from
Nikola Kacperska. Lehman was dominant early for the Tigers, recording 23 points, nine blocks and seven rebounds in the first 20 minutes.
Early in the second, KWU showed life with an 8-2 run of its own (including six unanswered) to cut the lead to 30 (67-37) at 15:45, but it was all FHSU from there as Lehman's layup started the Tigers final push of the night, a 23-4 stretch that lasted over eight minutes. During that stretch (which ended with 16 unanswered for Fort Hays State), Lehman pulled down her 10th board of night, giving her the triple-double.
Inside two minutes to play,
Jenna Ulrich's layup push FHSU at 100 points for the second time this season.
The Tigers hit the road this weekend to close out 2014, returning to MIAA play against Northwest Missouri State on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 1:30 p.m.
