Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer rolls versus Southwest Baptist, 5-0

Fort Hays State Men's Soccer rolled to its second straight shutout in impressive fashion, defeating Southwest Baptist 5-0 on Saturday at FHSU Stadium.

The win moved FHSU (4-3-1, 2-2-0 MIAA) back to .500 in conference play as the team had 19 shots in the game, with 11 on goal.

Michael Cole got things started for Tigers near the midpoint of the first half, taking an assist from Tanner Brock.  Brock dished a pass to the left side of the box for Cole, who dribbled around his defender and hit from 15 yards out to give FHSU a 1-0 lead.

Just before the half (44:34), Anthony Hernandez scored his first goal of the year and gave FHSU a two-spot over the Bearcats.  Tobias Patino and Joe Albright assisted in the goal, as Patino passed to Albright, who hit a one-touch to Hernandez mid-box.  Hernandez's shot deflected off an SBU defender, past a diving goalkeeper for the score.

As time expired in the half, Hernandez fired a ball towards the goal, but it was ruled time had expired before it found net.

Six minutes out of the break, Maurizio Costa tallied his second goal in as many days and put FHSU ahead by three.  Austin Clifton's shot was deflected by SBU's Lajos Zadravecz, but Costa was there for the put-back in the middle of the box.

After assisting in Costa's goal, Clifton tallied his own score at 60:01 after back-and-forth crosses from Diego Cabral and Costa.  Cabral crossed from the right side to Costa, left of the box, and Costa crossed back to Clifton for a one-touch goal.

Up 4-0, the Tigers scored their final goal in the 66th minute in similar pattern to their fourth score.  Hernandez's cross to Brock was gathered on the right side of the net, where Brock found Albright on the left side of the net for a cross-field goal.

The Tigers' defense was stifling against the Bearcats, limiting the visitor's to just three shots, including one in the second half.  Drew Wilson and Daniel Davila played all 90 minutes defensively.

Kent Freund picked up his third shutout of the season in the net, posting his second consecutive clean sheet and not facing a shot on goal.

FHSU has now scored 13 goals and not allowed a goal in its past two games.

Fort Hays State travels south this week for a Thursday (Oct. 2) night regional matchup with West Texas A&M before returning to FHSU Soccer Stadium to face Harding on Saturday (Oct. 4).
