The Fort Hays State Women's Soccer team defeated Missouri Southern, 1-0, on Saturday to close out a weekend on the road.
Â
FHSU improved to 4-3-1 (2-1-1 MIAA) with the win, and outshot the Lions 17-12 on the day. The Tigers put nine shots on goal, compared to eight on goal for MSSU.
Â
Scoreless for the first half, FHSU broke into the scoring column shortly into the second period. Just out of the break (49:58),
Jordan Shaw fired a cross into the box off a corner kick, finding the head of
Cenayda Guzman for what proved to be the game-winner.
Â
Guzman's goal was her second of the weekend (and season), as the junior forward scored against Southwest Baptist on Thursday. She led the team with four shots for the afternoon, just ahead of
Hailey Davey's three attempts. Both Guzman and Davey had three shots on goal.
Â
Kristen Thompson posted her fourth shutout of the season, recording eight saves in 90 minutes of action.
Â
The Tigers' defense continued its strong play of late, with
Mallory Diederich and
Jamie Babyak putting together complete game performances while
Gabrielle Makatura played 77 minutes of the Tigers' shutout. Â The Tigers' other defensive starters,
Hannah Smith (69 minutes played) and
Taylor Siedel (58 minutes played), had one and two shots in the game, respectively.
Â
The Tigers continue their stay away from FHSU Soccer Stadium next weekend with conference matches at Lindenwood and Central Missouri on Oct. 3 and 5, respectively.
