Tiger Offense Continues to Roll in 4-0 Victory Over Bearcats

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Fort Hays State men's soccer team provided yet another shutout victory on the season after they defeated the Southwest Baptist Bearcats 4-0 on Friday (Oct. 13). The Tigers improve to 7-4-2 on the season and 5-0 in the MIAA, while the Bearcats dip to 1-9 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

Senior Derick Gonzalez set the tone for the Tigers early in the match with his team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 11th minute from 30 yards out to the right side of the goal past the keeper to put FHSU up 1-0. Gonzalez elongated his program record to ten straight matches tallying a point. The Tigers only needed another four shots to increase the lead as Raul Fierro found the back of the net in the 21st minute for his fifth goal of the season on a pass set up from Brian Ness to give the Tigers the 2-0 advantage.

The Tigers cooled off a bit as they lead 2-0 after the first 45 minutes of play. FHSU was not done on the afternoon as Luis Torres took a corner kick from Gonzalez in the 51st minute and used his head to hit the ball through the back of the net for his first goal on the season. The Tigers pushed their lead to 3-0 over the Bearcats.

After shots by Killian Gorman and Ness, Fierro scored his second goal of the match and sixth of the year in the 59th minute on a pass from Abdoulaye Cisse to increase the Tiger lead to 4-0. The score would suffice as the Tigers extended their unbeaten streak to eight matches and stay undefeated against conference opponents.

Fort Hays State outshot Southwest Baptist 21-8 in the match. The Tigers were able to get eight shots on frame compared to four for the Bearcats. Fierro accounted for three of the eight shots on goal for the Tigers.

Michael Yantz recorded four saves in the match while earning the victory in goal tonight for the Tigers, improving his overall record to 6-3-2 on the season. He notched his 13th shutout of his career to break the school record for most shutouts in a career in FHSU history.

The Tigers look to continue their win streak on Sunday (Oct. 15) as they travel to Tahlequah, Okla., to take on the Northeastern State RiverHawks. Kickoff is set for noon.
