HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State led from start to finish in a 92-58 win over Sterling College on Saturday evening (Nov. 25) at Gross Memorial Coliseum. Fort Hays State had four players finish in double figures scoring, led by career-high performances of 20 points from
Trey O'Neil and 16 points from
Grant Holmes.
The Tigers opened the game on a 6-0 run and never looked back, steadily growing their lead to 27 by halftime. O'Neil had 17 of his career-high 20 points by halftime to pace the Tigers to a 49-22 advantage.
The margin never dipped below 24 points in the second half as the final spread rested at 34. Holmes scored 13 of his 16 points after halftime. Joining O'Neil and Holmes in double figures were
Aaron Nicholson with 11 and
Hadley Gillum with 10.
Kyler Kinnamon and Nicholson tied for the team lead in assists with four each.
Calvin Harrington led the Tigers in rebounds with five.
The Tigers shot the ball efficiently at 57.4 percent overall, which included a 60.9 percent effort in the second half. FHSU was 14-of-26 (53.8 percent) beyond the 3-point line.
Isaac Ostrosky led Sterling in scoring with 11 points, followed by Trey Dubbert with 10. The Warriors shot 40 percent from the field and beyond the 3-point line.
This was the final tune-up for FHSU as it opens conference play on Thursday night (Nov. 30) in Hays with Missouri Southern. The game is set for 7:30 pm, following the women's game at 5:30 pm.
