HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State rolled to a 90-63 win over Newman University on Monday night (Dec. 18) at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. The Tigers improved to 9-3 overall, while the Jets dropped to 5-6.

The Tigers jumped out to a 10-point lead quickly, opening the game on a 15-5 run by hitting their first seven shots of the game. The lead grew to 13 at 20-7 before Newman stormed back with a 12-0 run to make it a one-point game, 20-19, with 9:32 to play in the opening frame. A 5-0 burst produced Newman's first lead of the night at 24-22, but it was short lived for just 27 seconds as Grant Holmes drained a three to put the Tigers back on top. FHSU never trailed again from that point on. A 21-6 run by the Tigers to close the half resulted in a 13-point halftime lead of 43-30.

The Tigers carried a 5-0 run into the second half and made it 11-0 by scoring the first six points after the break. Newman never pulled closer than 17 points the rest of the way. Fort Hays State's largest lead was 32 at the 3:35 mark and the final margin settled at 27.

The Tigers shot the ball very well in both halves, hitting at a 56 percent rate from the field in the first half and 59.1 percent in the second half. That produced a 57.4 percent overall effort for the game. The Tigers scorched the nets beyond the arc at 61.1 percent (11-of-18). FHSU was also solid at the free-throw line at 80.6 percent for the game (25-of-31).

Hadley Gillum led the Tigers with 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field, which included two 3-point field goals. He was a perfect 5-of-5 at the charity stripe. Grant Holmes was the only other Tiger to reach double figures with 12 points. Kyler Kinnamon dished out a team-high six assists, helping the Tigers to 21 assists as a team on the night.

Andre Sands was the only Newman player in double figures with 18 points, while two others had eight each. The Jets shot 40.4 percent for the game and just 33.3 percent beyond the 3-point line, while committing 17 turnovers.

The Tigers take a 12-day rest before returning to the floor against McPherson College on December 30 at Gross Memorial Coliseum. Game time will be at 4 pm, following the women's game against Bethany College at 2 pm.
