Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Offensive Outburst Leads Tigers to First Victory of the Season

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State men's soccer team picked up their first win of the season with a 7-0 shutout against Southwest Baptist on Friday night (Sept. 22). The Bearcats fell to 0-6 overall.

Raul Fierro had a big night for the Tigers as he recorded his first career hat trick with three goals on six shots, including four on frame. After his performance, Fierro sits in a tie for first in program history for goals in a match with his hat trick. The Tigers finished the match with 33 shots to move to second in school history for shots in a game.

Abdoulaye Cisse started the onslaught for the Tigers with a two foot tap in floater that was set up from Brian Ness in the ninth minute of the game. Fierro found the back of the net in the 15th minute to give the Tigers the 2-0 advantage. After the first two goals, the Bearcats shut down the Tiger offense for the remainder of the first half.

The silence wouldn't last long, however, as FHSU quickly increased the lead to 5-0 in the first five minutes of the second half. Fierro completed his hat trick with two goals and then Sergio Villalba slipped past the defense with a 15-foot dribbler that beat the keeper at the far post to pick up his first goal of the season.

The Tigers were not done as Derick Gonzalez scored his team-leading fifth goal of the year to give FHSU a 6-0 lead on a free kick in the 56th minute, beating the keeper at the right post. Fort Hays finally put the exclamation point on the game with Christopher Johnson picking up his first goal of the season in the 77th minute to cement the 7-0 lead.

Defensively, the Tigers not only kept the Bearcats scoreless, they only allowed one shot in 90 minutes of play with solid play from Killian Gorman, Luis Torres, Villalba and Caesar Jones. Michael Yantz picked up the victory to improve his record to 1-3-2 on the season.

The Tigers are back in action Sunday afternoon (Sept. 24). Northeastern State brings their 3-3 record to Hays to face the Tigers in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
