Fort Hays State, the No. 6 seed in Super Region 3, will take on No. 1 seed University of Indianapolis in the National Quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday (Dec. 4) at 5 pm CT (6 pm ET). The Greyhounds, ranked No. 7 in the nation heading into the NCAA Tournament, will be hosting the match on their home field. The Tigers are making their fifth national quarterfinal appearance in nine NCAA Tournament appearances overall and look to advance to the National Semifinals for the second time in program history.
Fort Hays State prevailed over Lake Erie in the Round of 16 on Thursday in Indianapolis with an outstanding 3-2 comeback victory. The Tigers trailed 2-0 midway through the second half and tied it up late in regulation with goals from senior defenders Antonio De La Torre and Alec Bevis. The Tigers completed their comeback when Blake Arndt found the net off a nice pass from Taisei Arima in the second overtime period. Arndt continues to lead the team in goals with 13, netting three in Fort Hays State's two NCAA Tournament matches so far this season. The Tigers have now won their last four matches in a row and seven of their last eight.
Indianapolis (17-1-2) coasted into the national quarterfinal match with 3-0 rout of Illinois-Springfield on Thursday in the Round of 16. Prior to that, UIndy defeated Cedarville the week earlier on their home field as well by a score of 3-1 in the Round of 32. The Greyhounds have outscored opponents 52-15 this season. UIndy is 10-0-1 at home so far this season with the lone tie coming against Lewis University in the regular season by a score of 1-1. UIndy has scored at least two goals in the all 10 of their home wins this season. The Greyhounds held the No. 1 national ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll three weeks this season, holding the spot from Sept. 28-Oct. 11 and then again Oct. 26-Nov. 1.
Indianapolis brings a 21-match unbeaten streak at home into this contest, going 18-0-3 in that span. The last home loss for the Greyhounds occurred during the 2019 season to Maryville University by a score of 1-0 on October 27.
This will be the second meeting in history between the Tigers and Greyhounds. The last meeting was in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament when the Greyhounds were victorious 3-2. Already completing the first two legs of the feat, the Tigers will be looking to knock off the No. 3, 2, and 1 seeds consecutively in Super Region 3 to make the National Semifinal and Championship site next week in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
