TOPEKA, Kan. - The Fort Hays Women's Soccer team's match at Washburn in Topeka on Friday (Sept. 24) ended in a 1-1 draw. Both teams managed to score early in the first half, but never found the net again over the final 86 minutes of action. The Tigers moved to 3-1-3 overall and the Ichabods to 4-1-1.
The Ichabods struck first as Tera Lynch found the net in the 4th minute of the match, working her way through the back line of the Tiger defense for a one-on-one opportunity. The Tigers responded with a goal in the 24th minute as Hannah Mares received a nice crossing pass from Cailey Perkins and put it in the net for her first score of the season. The second half and pair of 10-minute overtime periods did not produce any scoring, but the Tigers were able take 11 shots of their 14 shots after halftime. FHSU won the overall shot battle 14-12. Keeper Deonna Wellbrock recorded six saves to bring her season total to 34.
The Tigers will be back on the pitch Sunday (Sept. 26) as they travel to No. 5 Emporia State for the conference opener. The teams played to a 1-1 draw in Hays last week in a non-conference match. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 pm.
