FHSU Men Cruise Past Central Christian by 33

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State improved to 4-1 overall on the season with a 65-32 win over Central Christian (Kan.) College on Tuesday evening (Nov. 22) at Gross Memorial Coliseum. FHSU doubled up Central Christian, plus one point, notching its largest win of the young season after a 31-point win over Bethel College last week.

The teams traded a pair of baskets before FHSU took the lead for good with 17:42 remaining in the first half. A 10-0 burst by FHSU after the 2-2 start put its lead in double figures for the first time at the 14:02 mark of the first half. The lead stayed in double figures from the 11:34 mark of the first half through the rest of the game as FHSU went on to hold a 35-10 halftime advantage. FHSU locked down the Central Christian offense, holding CCC to just 15.8 percent shooting in the first half.

Fort Hays State went on to build its largest lead of 34 points at the 3:37 mark of the second half on a Traejon Davis dunk off a nice interior assist from Gilbert Peters. The margin touched 34 again at the 2:55 mark when Lucas Hammeke notched his first two points as a Tiger on a floater near the rim. Peters put an exclamation on the win with under a minute to play by finishing with a dunk on a nice drive and dish from Jaheim Holden.

Kaleb Hammeke led a balanced scoring effort for the Tigers with 10 points, while dishing out a team-high five assists. Davis was one point away from a double-double, finishing with nine points and a career-high 11 rebounds. The starters and bench were nearly equal in scoring output, the starters just three points better at 34 compared to 31. Ten of the 12 FHSU players that saw action scored, and the ones that did not at least secured rebounds.

Fort Hays State dominated the game on the glass, doubling up CCC in rebounds 48-24. The Tigers had 17 offensive rebounds and scored 18 second-chance points.

Central Christian finished at 23.4 percent shooting for the game, and just 18.2 percent beyond the 3-point line. None of the CCC roster reached double figures in scoring, the best a nine-point effort from Chris Whitten off the bench. Jamir Spivey pulled down a team-best seven rebounds for CCC.

Fort Hays State remains at home to take on Manhattan Christian (Kan.) College on the backside of Thanksgiving. The teams are set to tipoff at 7 p.m. on Saturday evening (Nov. 26) at Gross Memorial Coliseum, which will follow a women's contest between FHSU and Tabor at 5 p.m.
